A Greener Earth

What would the world look like if we all ate a plant-based diet? This is a question our newest grantee is working to provide an answer to. Meet Dr. Matthew Hayek from the Harvard Animal Law & Policy Program, who in collaboration with other researchers around the world, is developing a global environmental model which identifies areas of conservation that will be made possible by global transitions towards plant-based diets. Our grant will help map and animate the transformation of animal-to-plant-based diets upon the global landscape. These maps and animations will show a literal greening of the earth and will identify areas with high potential for forest carbon sequestration (for slowing global warming) and for biodiversity conservation. These results will help politicians and decision-makers see connections between animal protection and environmental conservation. The hope is that this will lead to dietary behavioral changes and to meaningful conservation policies
